A Mequon man was cited by law enforcement after TSA found a loaded handgun in his coat as he tried to go through airport security.

TSA said the incident happened Tuesday morning at Mitchell International Airport.

Officials say that the man was stopped at a security checkpoint after officers noticed a loaded handgun in the pocket of his coat that had been placed on the conveyor belt.

The man told officials that he didn't know he was carrying his gun because he thought it was in a different jacket.

The man was questioned by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department and cited on state weapons charges.

Passengers are allowed to travel with firearms as long as they are in properly packaged and declared checked baggage. Firearms must be unloaded, packed in a hard-side case, locked and packed separately from ammunition. Travelers with concealed firearms permits are not allowed to bring guns in their carry-on bags.

At Mitchell International, 16 firearms were confiscated in 2019. There were 11 confiscated in 2018.
