WISCONSIN (NBC 26) — March is Brain Injury Awareness Month in America. Medical experts estimate that 12% of Wisconsinites will be affected by a brain injury in one way or another, according to the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Support Program Coordinator at SOAR Fox Cities.

The CDC defines a traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a disruption in the normal function of the brain that can be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or penetrating head injury. Everyone is at risk for a TBI, especially children and older adults.

Nationwide, roughly 2.4 million people will sustain a TBI each year. More than 5.3 million Americans are living with brain injury-related disabilities at a cost of more than $76 billion annually, according to the CDC.
