OCONTO COUNTY (NBC 26) — A man is facing criminal charges after a fatal crash in the town of Underhill on Sunday. The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office says alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash.

According to the sheriff's office, at about 11:11 p.m. Sunday, the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Dispatch Center was notified of a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of highways V and U in the town of Underhill.

The sheriff's office said a pickup truck was traveling west on Highway U when it failed to stop at the intersection and then went into the west ditch, hitting several trees.

When officers arrived, the sheriff's office said a 54-year-old man from Gillett was standing in the road outside of the truck. The passenger of the vehicle, a 54-year-old man from Keshena, was trapped inside the vehicle and died at the scene.

The Gillett man had minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. He was later taken to the Oconto County Jail and booked on the charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and operating after revocation.

The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office and the Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the crash.
