BROWN CO. (NBC 26) -- Nature lovers, be on the lookout! The Wisconsin DNR is hoping you'll pay extra attention whether on the road or at home for deer and "creepy crawlies."
To start, it's one we might run into the most: deer.
Operation Deer Watch is kicked off this month. It's a program the DNR said will help with deer management in Wisconsin. So if you see a deer, report a deer.
"We're definitely concerned about people are not moving around at the same rate that they have in the past, so they may not be bumping into deer as much as they have in the past," said Brian Dhuey, a DNR wildlife population and harvest assessment specialist.
If you do see a deer, you'll need to remember two things: what type it is (either a buck, doe, or fawn) and what county you saw it in. You can report it online; they also have a printable tally sheet to help you keep track. This program wraps up September 30th.
The other animals they want to know about are the 'creepy crawlies.'These include salamanders, snakes, frogs, and lizards. The DNR said many of them are dying under the wheels of our cars and trucks. So they want to know where you're seeing them, dead or alive, so they can figure out where they're most seen and how to better protect them. Many of these animal species are becoming endangered, threatened or of special concern as their numbers go down.
