MANITOWOC (NBC 26) — A little tent stocked with thousands of dollars in gift cards was pitched near downtown Manitowoc.

Collaborating with Grow It Forward, Colleen Homb of Lakeshore Cap hosted a pop-up pantry on Friday. Those who visited were eligible for a minimum $100 grocery card and a $100 gas card.

To be eligible, you have to earn 125% or less of the federal poverty level," said Colleen Homb, Executive Director of Lakeshore Cap. “If there is a single-person household earning $10 an hour, they are actually over income for this program.”

The funding is sourced from federal COVID relief dollars. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 8% of Manitowoc County lives in poverty.

Organizers say these efforts are just the beginning as inflation continues nationwide.
