MENOMONIE (NBC 26) — A Wisconsin boy has been capturing much of America's hearts this week, as Emmitt Bailey was recently crowned the USA Mullet Champion in the kid's division.
"I wanted cool hockey hair,” said Emmitt.
The 8-year-old boy has been rocking business in the front and a party in the back for the past couple of years; earning him the nickname "mullet boy".
Bailey from Menomonie, Wisconsin went from cool hockey hair to taking gold.
"We found out about it last year but they capped at 500 entries so we're looking for it this year,” Emmitt said.
Emmit and his father said they weren't expecting to win and instead were more focused on how many people were voting for his hair.
"Friday night at the football game they were handing out flyers with QR codes to vote for Emmitt. It was a fun experience just how many people were backing this little guy,” said Eric Bailey, Emmitt’s father.
NBC 26 asked Emmitt what his reaction was when he found out he won.
His response:
“Yay! I get a go-cart!” said Emmitt.
That is what he plans to buy with his cash prize of $2,500.
NBC 26 also asked him how he maintains those locks so well.
"It's a lot. It’s just a lot,” said Emmitt.
"We have his girl at Damper Mann at Eau Claire, she keeps it fresh and clean for him. We get it trimmed up pretty regularly to keep it looking so good,” said Eric.
Since being crowned the USA Mullet Champion, Emmitt said he's been getting a lot of attention including being asked to throw the first pitch at a Brewers game in September.
“Awesome,” said Emmitt.
He hopes to rock his iconic hairdo for years to come.
