GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — On Saturday morning, the community came out to donate items for the “Help for the Homeless Hygiene Drive” that took place at Lambeau Field.
“Anything that you can think of when you get up in the morning and you start your morning routine for getting showered, cleaned up and ready to go out for the day, or any kind of items for when you’re cleaning your house, doing your laundry or washing your dishes,” said Nan Pahl, the Director of Social Services for the Salvation Army.
The items collected were things such as shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, deodorant, hand soap, detergent, razors, diapers and baby wipes.
Pahl said these items will go towards helping 16 area shelters and programs.
She said it is a very crucial necessity as hygiene products can quickly add up.
“Not like you buy it once and you never need to buy it again. You are having that cost every couple of weeks. If I am a family or I’m an individual and I’m struggling that’s not necessarily my priority expense, so they need ways to be helped out by our community”, Pahl said.
Organizers of the event say they had a great turnout and said the beautiful weather certainly helped bring people out.
It’s the 29th year this drive has been hosted in partnership with the Green Bay Packers but it’s also the first ever that has been a drive-thru collection.
“With the pandemic we weren’t necessarily able to do our normal employee collection in the building so we thought about a drive thru and then asked if we could open it up to the public and they were all on board,” said Amanda Wery, the Community Outreach Senior Coordinator with the Green Bay Packers.
If you missed the collection on Saturday and still want to help out you have until the end of the weekend to go to any Festival Foods or Walgreens to drop off items.
“The community support has been wonderful. In this area we know that our community never lets us down,” Wery said.
