ASHWAUBENON (NBC 26) -- We can't escape the winter slush and salt from ending up on our feet, but a local man is working to fix it.

Paul Herwaldt of Shoe Repair Plus in Ashwaubenon loves to keep customers on their toes, and has been doing so for about 55 years.

“I’ve been doing this since I was 13 years old in 1965,” said Herwaldt. “I worked for my daddy who learned it from his father.

So, he knows a thing or two about one of the biggest problems we walk into every winter: getting slush and salt off your shoes.

Herwaldt says while he may be the only one who walks around and looks at people's feet. Keeping them clean and in good condition not only makes you look nicer but will also help save you money in the long run. Most people wait too long or just choose to buy new than get repaired, which isn't his motto.

“If the shoe fits, repair it,” he says. Adding, that he does let customers know if the repair would be more expensive than buying new.

Shoe Repair Plus gets a lot of foot traffic through the week, about 50 people a day, with fall and winter as his busiest seasons.

His advice for customers looking to use waterproof spray is to use it once a week, as it evaporates over time. He adds, that with a little preventative care, your boots will always be made for walking. He also recommends wiping down your shoes with a damp rag, spraying them and then letting them dry over the weekend, and you'll be good to go on Monday.

Herwaldt says it'll cost you around $9 to clean a pair of shoes and $15 for boots. Watch the story for his secret on getting out salt.
