APPLETON -- September 11, 2001 was a day that inspired many to help others, like firefighter Mitch Lundgaard, an Appleton firefighter who died in a shooting earlier this year.
One of Lundgaard's friends spoke about 9/11 at his funeral, how he and Lundgaard watched as the news came in that America was attacked. It was that day that inspired Lundgaard to shift from architecture to fire science and become a firefighter.
"He wanted to help others and saw that this was a way,” said Captain Jason Lee. “Saw other people helping others that day and this was a good way that he could."
Lundgaard served with the Appleton Fire Department for 14 years.
