GREEN BAY, Wis. (NBC 26) — A $10,000 grant was approved to beautify over two acres under the city's Mason Street viaduct as part of The Shipyard Underpass Place-Making Project, according to the City of Green Bay.

“Receipt of creative place-making funds from the National Endowment for the Arts is an indicator that the Green Bay Public Arts Commission has hit a significant benchmark in its evolution and is an important tool in place-based community development, affordable housing and building civic pride. We look forward to working with our partners to realize the vision for The Shipyard Development,” said Green Bay Public Arts Commission Chair Kelli Strickland.

The Green Bay Public Arts Commission said this project is among 1,073 projects across America totaling nearly $25 million that were selected during the first round of fiscal year 2021 funding in the Grants for Arts Projects funding category. A total of 14 grants were awarded to various organizations within Wisconsin alone.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support this project from the City of Green Bay,” said Arts Endowment Acting Chairman Ann Eilers. “The City of Green Bay is among the arts organizations across the country that have demonstrated creativity, excellence, and resilience during this very challenging year.”

City officials said this project will utilize previously unused space and create an immersive public art environment through the addition of murals, sculptures, and other mediums. They said it will help convey the neighborhood's unique identity and history through art along with enhancing the visibility and safety within the site.

The City of Green Bay hopes this project will create a special place for the local neighborhood as well as the Green Bay community and tourists.
