GREEN BAY, Wis — (NBC 26) -- School districts across our region are stepping up today and trying to make sure families can give their children the nourishment they need to stay healthy.
In just the last seven days the Green Bay Area School District has sent families home with nearly 56-thousand meals. It's an effort that the head cook at Franklin Middle School says can be a daunting task.
"Sometimes it can be overwhelming," says Emily Colin.
But staff at Franklin aren't in this alone. On Wednesday 14 different schools across Green Bay have turned into breakfast and lunch pickup zones to help meet the community's need.
The goal is to provide breakfast and lunch to kids, Monday through Friday, for all of Green Bay's children who could use a meal.
"We're going to do this for as long as it takes. We know that at the end of the day people who are hungry are going to be struggling and they are going to be more likely to get sick. So we're going to continue to serve meals and to provide the service for families for as long as we can," says Kristina Shelton, a member of the Green Bay Area School District's board.
On Wednesday, Shelton helped hand out bagged lunches and breakfasts all in an effort to make sure everyone in Green Bay who is having a tough time providing for their kids right now, would consider visiting one of their locations across town.
"This is offered for free for anyone who is in our district. So there aren't any questions asked. If people show up and they need meals we will give it to them. It's incredibly safe, all of the workers are using masks and gloves," adds Shelton.
And if you're having a hard time getting to one of the 14 locations across town, Shelton says it's okay for a friend or neighbor to pick up the meals for your kids too.
