GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- The Green Bay School Board voted Monday to close down Jefferson Elementary School.

According to Lori Blakeslee, Green Bay Area Public Schools Director of Communications, the Board voted 4-3 to close the school located on Green Bay's west side. Starting next year, students from that school will attend Fort Howard Elementary instead.

Blakeslee said Jefferson, with 115 students attending, has the the lowest enrollment of the district's 26 elementary schools. Fort Howard has enough room to take on all of the students, according to Blakeslee, bringing a combined enrollment total up to nearly 300 students.

By combining the schools, Blakeslee said the district will be able to provide current Jefferson Elementary students with more access to resources.

The district says it will save about $300,000 consolidating the schools. Pending additional approvals, the district plans to convert Jefferson Elementary into a Head Start facility.
