GREEN BAY — Green Bay Police are reminding pet owners to keep your furry friends out of the car during hot weather.
Police say officers have responded to several calls involving pets left unattended in vehicles with the warm weather. Two incidents reported recently included dogs left in cars parked in lots.
On July 4, an officer responded to the Home Depot on S. Taylor St for a small terrier in a truck with the engine off and the windows cracked open. At the time of this call, it was 77 degrees with a “feel like” temperature of 85 degrees. Police say the temperature in the truck was over 100 degrees, so they broke the window to rescue the dog. The owner was cited for mistreating an animal, which carries a fine for $376.
On July 26, officers reported to a dog left in a car parked at Lambeau Field. Officers found a medium size hunting dog in the vehicle with the engine off and all four windows cracked about three inches. Police say the outside temperature was 76 degrees with 68 percent humidity.
Police cite the American Veterinary Medical Association online, which says with the outside temperature of 75 degrees and a time lapse of 60 minutes, the temperature inside the vehicle could reach 118 degrees. The officer was able to unlock the car and retrieve the dog, which was taken to the Humane Society until the owner could retrieve it. The owner did receive a citation for mistreating an animal.
Police encourage pet owners to make alternative arrangement to ensure the safety of their pets.
