GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — A Green Bay man is accused of blackmailing a teen girl in a sextortion case.

According to a criminal complaint, the investigation into the case began last November, when the 19-year-old victim told Brown County authorities she was being harassed and blackmailed.

The victim stated in the criminal complaint that she had sent nude pictures and video to a man she had met through social media when she was 16 years old. The criminal complaint said she had sent more than 100 images because he had threatened to send them to her parents. The suspect also threatened to rape the victim if she didn't continue sending images, the criminal complaint says.

The criminal complaint said after the victim first met the man on social media, she was convinced to perform a sex act in order to obtain a job. The recording of this act was then used to exploit the victim further, according to the criminal complaint.

Through an investigation, the criminal complaint says authorities identified Roberto Carlos Varela as a suspect. He was arrested after a traffic stop on Feb. 25 and appeared in court the following day, according to court records.

Varela has been charged with two counts of sexual exploitation of a child and one count of child pornography possession.
