GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- A person is accused of attacking a firefighter Wednesday morning, according to a media release from Green Bay Metro Fire Department.

At around 10:40 a.m., the release said a Green Bay Metro Fire Department Lieutenant saw a person walking in the intersection of Broadway and Dousman streets. Out of concern for his safety, the Lieutenant approached the person and tried to convince him to move to the sidewalk.

The report said the person wasn't cooperative and became agitated. The Lieutenant called Green Bay Police for help while trying to convince the person to get out of the way of traffic. Green Bay Metro Fire Department says the person suddenly lunged at the Lieutenant and hit him several times.

Both the Lieutenant and the person went to the ground where the fight continued. Several drivers stopped to help the Lieutenant in subduing the person. Police arrived and took the person into custody. The Lieutenant was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Green Bay Metro Fire Department is not releasing the Lieutenant's name at this time.

The Fire Department is also crediting a Brown County Public Safety Communications Dispatcher who was monitoring the Lieutenant's radio channel for his safety, which led to a rapid response to help.
