HOWARD (NBC 26) -- Governor Tony Evers along with several other local officials announced on Wednesday morning at the Howard-Suamico School District that the State will be awarded grant money to fix and improve roads in the state.
The grant called the Multimodal Local Supplement (MLS) is a one-time $75 million funding program for local transportation projects. Statewide, 84 towns, 34 cities and villages, and 34 counties will receive funding from the program.
Gov. Evers says 152 projects will be taking place thanks to $75 million. Evers also announced one of those projects will include widening and improving Lineville Road (County Highway M) in Suamico and adding sidewalks, bike lanes and a pedestrian crossing.
There were more than 1,600 applications received from across the state. In January and February, the Governor's office says three separate committees of local representatives from counties, cities, villages and towns met to review the applications. While the program allowed up to 90 percent of state funding to any project, the committee chose to increase the local match in order to spread the funds as widely as possible. The 152 projects are funded in nearly all of Wisconsin's 72 counties.
Work is expected to start shortly on the selected projects. The governor's biennial budget invested more than $465 million in new funding for highways, local roads, and transit aids, including $320 million to go directly to state highway rehabilitation.
