Garden planning season underway

With all the warmer weather we've had, a lot of people are planning their gardens for this year.

While it's not too early to start cleaning your flower beds and putting mulch down, you need to be patient when it comes to planting.

"Sometimes the big box stores get a shipment of plants and supplies, so people assume that's the right time to start planting things," said Lindsay Hendricks, Green Bay Botanical Gardens Horticulture Manager. "But a lot of times those plants come from down south that aren't used to our Wisconsin weather, so I you plant them outside too early, they might not like if we get a late season frost."

A rule of thumb is to plant your tomatoes and peppers after Memorial Day. Hardy plants like lettuce and radishes can go in the ground a little earlier.
