Free laundry washing for neighbors in need

GREEN BAY (NBC26) - No one wants to wear dirty clothes, especially in the winter.

“If you’re wearing a lot of dirty layers, nobody is comfortable,” said Natashia Atkinson.

But for locals who don't have a washer and dryer, or maybe the financial means, the piles of clothes can stack up.

“We go through clothes every day, there’s a lot of clothes we have to wash,” said Flora Rogers. “Sometimes we have 4-5 bags of clothes. It’s too much; you have little kids, you have older kids.”

This is where Laundry Love comes into play. They're a nonprofit in Green Bay that's almost two years old, providing free washing opportunities for neighbors in need.

“We want the kids to be able to go to school with clean clothes,” said Atikinson, the lead director of the organization. “It provides a lot for their esteem; it combats bullying. Moms and dads, they need clean clothes to go to work and provide for their families. People need clean clothes to get a job and keep a job.”

Laundry Love provides the soap, the quarters, and even a warm meal as about 100 people come through Corner Coin Laundry's doors each event.

“It’s nice to come somewhere that’s not far,” Rogers added, who participates in the program. “We don't have to struggle to get there, how you going to get there, how are you going to get back home.”

The organization hosts free washing events about twice a month, spending about $350-400 each time. Individuals are able to wash two loads of laundry and families can wash five. Locals are also encouraged to bring in their bedding and blankets.

Money used for the events comes from donations, click here to learn more about how to help. Their next free washing opportunity is on February 11th.

Laundry Love also started a new program recently called Elder Love. With this program, they go to area senior living homes and help wash clothes and bedding for seniors in our community.
