Fond du Lac man dies in custody

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — An investigation is underway in Fond du Lac after a man died in police custody.

The City of Fond du Lac Police Department said officers stopped the 37-year-old Fond du Lac man Sunday night near Division Street and Main Street for a traffic violation.

They said a Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department K-9 unit was also called to the scene to help.

Police said the man was currently out on bail for a previous incident and had violated the conditions of his bond. He was taken into custody.

They said the man was in the backseat of the police squad car when he started showing signs of medical distress.

Police said an ambulance transported the man to the hospital for treatment where he was later pronounced dead.

They said the cause of death is under investigation and are waiting for autopsy results.

The City of Fond du Lac Police Department said the City of Sheboygan Police Department is leading the investigation.

They did not release the name of the man.

Police said the officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative assignment as a standard procedure for this type of incident. They did release the officers' names.
