GREEN BAY, Wis. — The first ship for the Nicolet Bank Tall Ships festival has been announced: the Santa María.

The Santa María is a replica of the Spanish ships that traveled across the Atlantic Ocean in the 15th and 16th centuries.

According to a news release, the ship was named after the Nao Santa María sailed by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and was built in Spain by the Nao Victoria Foundation in 2017. The 200-ton, three mast ship made several travels to France and Spain in 2018, as well as a voyage across the Atlantic.

The Tall Ships festival takes place in the Port of Green Bay from July 26 to 28, followed by a sail through Sturgeon Bay July 29 and sail past Algoma on July 30. Tickets will go on sale Friday, March 15 at tallshipswisconsin.com.
