Firefighters found heavy smoke at the scene of an apartment fire Tuesday afternoon in New London, according to a news release.

Crews got the call just before 4:30 p.m. to a 24-unit apartment complex on the 300 block of Oshkosh Street.

Tenants had evacuated the apartments when firefighters arrived. Crews extinguished a fire in the kitchen of a first-floor apartment, and firefighters rescued a small dog and cat, who should be fine, according to the news release.

Smoke, but not structural, damage was left at the scene.

The fire appeared to have started on or near the kitchen stove, according to the New London Fire Department.

A church across the street provided shelter to tenants who had evacuated, the news release said.
