MANITOWOC (NBC 26) — Law enforcement reported a vehicle left the road and ended up in the Manitowoc River around 7 p.m. Friday.

The Manitowoc Police Department said the crash happened near 75 Maritime Drive.

Police said the vehicle was traveling on Maritime Drive when it left the roadway for an unknown reason.

Updated information from the Department said the vehicle hit a parked vehicle, not a tree, before ending up in the river.

Kayakers in the area said they attempted to assist the driver as the vehicle sank.

A statement from the Department said one of their responding officers removed his duty gear and dove into the water after the vehicle. He was unable to help the driver because of the water's depth and lack of clarity.

According to the initial report, the vehicle was found by the Manitowoc County Dive Team and removed from the water by Hi-Way 42 Garage.

The driver, a 26-year-old Manitowoc man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone with information about this crash are encouraged to contact the Manitowoc Police Department Shift Commander at (920) 686-6551.
