A semi driver died in a two semi-truck vs. car crash on Highway 57 just north of Man-Cal Road in the town of Holland at 6:15 a.m. Friday, according to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.
A northbound semi-tanker, driven by a 50-year-old Whitelaw-area man, had stopped to back into a water distribution station with a small 4-door vehicle stopped behind it. The driver of the northbound semi stated he started to back up and noticed the south bound semi-tanker, driven by a 60-year-old Pulaski area man, was closer than he anticipated.
The norbound semi driver attempted to pull forward and was struck in the rear section of the tanker, causing the driver side rear tires to land on the cab of the southbound semi-tanker. The tanker was then pushed into the small vehicle that had been stopped behind, pushing it into the ditch with the passenger side rear tires of the tanker on top of it. Those inside the small vehicle, a mother, father and one-year-old from the Forest Junction area, received only minor injuries with the one-year-old receiving none. They were treated and released from a local hospital.
The driver of the northbound semi was not injured. The driver of the southbound semi was pronounced dead at the scene.
All parties involved were wearing seatbelts. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office Reconstruction Unit.
