APPLETON (NBC 26) — A mural painted on the side of a building last summer will ultimately have to come down due to renovation of the building.

The organization Appleton Downtown Inc. said Wednesday the "Downtown Unites" mural will be "irreparably impacted" by unavoidable structural repairs required to the masonry wall where the mural was painted.

Local artist Irineo Medina painted the mural in June of 2020 on the corner of Appleton Street and College Avenue.

"When building owner, Marcie Harris, started interior renovations to get ready for a new tenant, she, a licensed structural engineer, discovered a deteriorating wall that needed to be immediately rebuilt. Unfortunately, that meant the Downtown Unites mural would be irreparably impacted," a statement from Appleton Downtown Inc. reads.

Masons started work on repairing the wall and window cuts on the side of the building Monday, February 8th.

Posters of the original mural will be available for sale in the upcoming weeks at www.appletondowntown.org.

Harris said she and her husband loved the mural so much that they have commissioned Medina to produce another mural for the Appleton community this year.
