DOOR CO. (NBC 26) — Are you daydreaming of warmer weather and outdoor fun?

Well, Tuesday is National Plan a Vacation Day and destination door county says there's safe ways to have fun while taking the proper precautions.

It's a winter weekday in Door County, quiet and peaceful.

"I think you get stuck every winter, this winter more than others because there's not much to do outside of being at home", said Matt Gasser, a Chicago resident visiting Wisconsin.

Matt Gasser made the trip to Door County from Chicago, a little chance to get away even if it's different than before.

"I'm looking forward for the day we can travel more freely and meet more people", Gasser said.

The past year has been filled with canceled getaways, but as we learn more about the coronavirus and get vaccinated, Door County leaders say it's a great time to plan the trip you may have missed.

"People I think have been feeling real comfortable now because of all the outdoor recreation we have. Natural social distanced here. Whether they're on kayak or on the trials. Lots of opportunities to keep your space from others", said Jon Jarosh, Communications Director at Destination Door County.

Making plans can also be a great winter exercise.

Tourism leaders say it can help us get through these winter months.

"It improves your mood. They find just anticipating a vacation can show as much positives as being in one", said Anne Sayers, Acting Secretary for the Wisconsin Department of Tourism.

When you travel local, your dollar also helps stimulate the local economy.

202 thousand Wisconsinites, our own friends and neighbors rely on tourism for their livelihoods."It's important. If you have those travel dollars to spend, it's important that you're spending them on the local restaurants, bars, local attractions and help us support a place we in Wisconsin are proud to call home", Sayers said.

And if you just can't wait, remember Door County and these quiet, peaceful days to get away.

"A neat spot to watch Mother Nature, especially in the winter put its artistic cap and make some neat ice formations for us", Jarosh said.
