APPLETON (NBC 26) — A house fire that included one death is under investigation, the Appleton Fire Department says.
Crews responded to the fire Tuesday night around 11 p.m. in the 1600 block of S. Mayfair Drive in Appleton. The initial call indicated that the house next door was on fire.
It took crews about 45 minutes to get the fire under control. The fire department says while extinguishing the fire, it was discovered that the lone male resident of the house had died in the fire.
The fire is currently under investigation and a cause has not been determined. The fire department says the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Outagamie County Coroner’s Office also assisted on scene, which is standard on all fires where a fatality occurs.
While the cause is not yet known, the Appleton Fire Department would like to remind residents to check their smoke alarms monthly.
