GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — The Green Bay Police Department is in the search for crossing guards for this school year. Commander Kevin Warych said it's just in case schools flip the switch and send kids back in person.
"It could be virtual today, it could be in session tomorrow," he said.
The part-time position does have a few requirements, like a high school diploma or equivalent, and only requires a few hours in the morning and afternoon. Warych adds they're trying to build their contact list because like any job, someone could call in sick or take vacation.
With safety as the number one goal, he adds, recruiting for this position is another reminder to pay attention on the road.
"It's distracted driving, inattentive driving, people not stopping for the stop sign, people rolling through the stop sign, people not following the crosswalk rules. If someone is in the crosswalk, they have to stop, that's a problem city-wide, not just specifically pertaining to any school district or school zone."
The Green Bay Area Public School District is starting virtual this year; but by recruiting now, this allows the department to pivot and be prepared.
