GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — Fond du Lac, Wis (NBC 26) -- Students at both public and private schools across Wisconsin may soon have the opportunity to frequently test for COVID-19. Governor Evers announced this week that the state has received $175 million from the Federal government to support testing on school grounds.
According to Governor Evers and DHS, the funding will be used to develop a program to support school-based COVID-19 testing sites for teachers, staff, and students. The state is currently allowing schools to choose different testing options for the spring and summer semesters, but they plan on offering more options when schools reopen for the fall.
As of Wednesday, the COVID-19 testing on school grounds will not be mandated according to a press release from Governor Evers' office. Instead, the current plan is for the testing to be conducted on a voluntary basis.
In northeast Wisconsin, a public relations representative from the Green Bay Area Public School District stated that they currently "are not intending on testing students."
