GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- The Coast Guard said Friday a 740-foot freighter suffered a loss of propulsion and ran aground Thursday. It happened about five nautical miles north of Fox River in Green Bay.

According to the Coast Guard, the freighter is the Canadian-flagged Algoma Conveyor, which was enroute to the Fox River Terminal when it lost propulsion and remains grounded near Harbor Entrance Channel Light 14, with its stern partially blocking the channel.

The vessel is in stable condition and there are no reports of any pollution or injuries to the crew. The 18-member crew is monitoring the ship, which has a cargo of road salt, for damage. A Coast Guard helicopter overflew the vessel and a Coast Guardsman responded on-scene and no pollution was visible.

The Coast Guard says it is working with the vessel owner, the Algoma Central Corporation, and a contracted salvage representative, Hudson Marine Management Services, to approve a salvage plan that minimizes impact to the environment.

An additional Coast Guard team including pollution responders and a marine investigator are on scene and continuing the investigation.
