City of Oconto declares flood emergency

The City of Oconto has declared a flood emergency.

All traffic should stay off city roads until flooding subsides. Police and fire personnel are out patrolling at this time.

NBC 26 spoke with a woman who lives on Pecor Street in Oconto. She said the street in front of her home is completely flooded.

"It looks like a river flowing," said Cindy Agen. " There is ice flowing down the street. There are a few cars trapped in the boat parking lot across the street from me. It looks like they have the intersections blocked off. The water is coming up on our front lawn and back lawn. It's a mess."

City officials said water is flooding over the banks of the Oconto River and coming up through the storm sewers.

"The ice broke up and is in chunks and is trying to move down the river," said Sara Perizzo, Oconto's City Administrator. "It's getting jammed at bridges and it's causing backups at the water."

Officials advise the situation is changing by the minute, so obey street signs and use common sense. They confirm there have been no evacuations at this time.
