GREEN BAY (NBC26) — The city of Green Bay has been preparing all week for the serious snow storm.
"We've had a couple scares," said Chris Pirlot, Director of Operations for Green Bay Public Works. "But this one is coming over us."
The city did preventative salting on some residential streets, where there are hills and curves, and they will probably have to go back and scrape off the ice, he said.
"The hidden slippery spots," said Pirlot. "That's what we're concerned about, as well as getting the snow off the streets."
This would be a great weekend to stay home, if you can, he said.
"Our recommendation, or advice, from the city, is it's going to start getting cold," said Pirlot. "If you don't have to go anywhere, don't. Tuck in at home. Obviously if you have to go out, drive carefully."
If you do need to go out, now's the time to evaluate your car. Check your battery; they usually last three to five years, said Jeff Knoespel, service adviser at Downtown Auto Service. If yours is older than that, it might need to be replaced.
"Batteries are a big part of that," he said. "They're not as effective in winter and cold weather."
He also advises checking your tires and your brakes.
"You want to make sure your brakes are working well," he said. "If you do get into an emergency stopping situation, you can stop safely and not be sliding all over the road, which is unsafe for everybody."
