SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (NBC 26) -- A child is injured after accidentally firing a loaded gun.

It happened on the 1400 block of South 17th street in Sheboygan.

According to reports, a young child found a loaded handgun that had been left in the house unsecured. The weapon discharged and the child suffered a non-life threatening injury to their hand.

The child was taken to Children's Wisconsin hospital in Milwaukee.

Two people were in the house when the gun went off. Police and Child Protective Services are still investigating.

The Sheboygan Police Department says all weapons should be kept unloaded, secure and not within the reach of children.
