OCONTO COUNTY (NBC 26) -- A child died after being found unconscious in the Oconto River, the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

The Sheriff's Office said officers first responded to a report of a missing two-year-old boy at around 7:34 p.m. Saturday in a wooded area near the Oconto River in the Town of Stiles.

Deputies and emergency responders searched for the child for about an hour before he was found unconscious in the river. The Sheriff's Office said life-saving measures began immediately and the boy was taken to the hospital.

The Sheriff's Office said the child was transported by ambulance to St. Clare Memorial Hospital where he passed away.

This incident is being investigated by the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office and the Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office.
