CAROLINE, Wis — CAROLINE, Wis - Following a building explosion in Shawano County just last week, two men have died from their injuries and two others are still trying to recover. Tonight NBC26 spoke to a friend and fellow Lions club member of the victims to find out how their tight knit community is coping with this tragedy.

In Caroline about fifty members of the Caroline Lions Club are preparing for the biggest fundraiser of the year for them. But this weekend, they have to get their work done with a lot of heartache.

Members say they are getting ready for thousands of people to show up to Caroline on Thursday, for their Colorama event. It’s an event that brings horse riders to town to camp, listen to music and ride trails. But this year four of their members won’t be present to help out because of an explosion that injured two of them, and ultimately killed two others who have been identified as Steve Verg and Michael Suehring. The two men have been a part of the Caroline Lions collectively for over three decades.

“I know some Lion’s members say it hasn’t hit them yet and they think it will hit them this weekend when you’re working, and you don’t see them other two there to laugh and work with. I guess it will be the beginning of the healing process. I think this weekend reality will set in that they’re not going to be here anymore,” says Wayne Schwartz a Lions Club member.

Lion club members tell NBC26 that all four men present for that explosion were working on a project at the time for this weekend’s gathering at Colorama. Those members add that both of the men killed were long time members of the Lions who got a lot of satisfaction by giving back to their tight knit community in the Caroline area.
