Some people swear by frying that turkey for the tastiest Thanksgiving dinner.

The Bellevue Fire Department demonstrated what not to do when using a turkey fryer.

Captain Andy Aschenbrenner with the Bellevue Fire Department said you can still use the fryer as an option, you just have to be smart.

Don't use the fryer inside any building. It has to be outside and a good distance away from any roof or overhang.

Make sure your bird is thawed before you fry. Problems arise when people submerge the turkey in hot oil and it is still frozen.

You also want to make sure your fryer is on a level surface so there is no risk of it tipping over.

According to the National Fire Protection Association there are specific considerations to use when cooking with oil:

  • Always stay in the kitchen when frying on the stove top
  • Keep an eye on what you fry. If you see wisps of smoke or the oil smells, immediately turn off the burner
  • Heat the oil slowly to the temperature you need
  • Add food gently to the pot or pan so the oil doesn't splatter
  • Always cook with a lid beside your pan
  • Never throw water or use a fire extinguisher on an oil fire
  • If you don't feel comfortable sliding a lid over the pan, get everyone out of your home and call the fire department from outside

The NFPA says you should not use the stove or stove top if you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol.

You should always stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food.

Use timers to remind you that you are cooking and keep anything that can catch fire away from your stove top.

Here are the things the NFPA recommends to do if you have a cooking fire:

  • Get out and close the door behind you to help contain the fire
  • Call 911
  • If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out
  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed
