There are a lot of people itching to take their next vacation, but the pandemic isn't over.

The Better Business Bureau has tips to protect your health and your wallet.

Whatever type of vacation you're seeking, planning is key during a pandemic.

It's important to do your research. Travel restrictions vary by state and country and are constantly changing.

"What are their stay at home orders? What are their mask mandates," said Susan Bach, the Regional Director of the Better Business Bureau Serving Wisconsin. "Check the local health department's website as well as many tourist attractions or hotels that you may be staying at. Check if the pool is open. Is the gym open? Things like that."

Take precautions before and after your trip.

The CDC recommends avoiding large group events or using public transportation during the 14 days leading up to your trip, and getting tested one to three days before you leave.

Get tested again three to five days after getting home.

Quarantine for seven days after travel regardless of your results.

The CDC also advises getting vaccinated and waiting two weeks after your final dose to travel.

Flexibility is also key during a pandemic.

Check the cancellation policies on all rentals and reservations.

"That includes car rentals, hotels, airfare and anything you might be reserving," said Bach.

It's a good idea to pay extra for a chance at full refunds if you have to make a last minute change.

Opt for road trips instead of flying.

Enjoy outdoor trips that include activities like camping and hiking.

Wear a mask and social distance when you are in a public space.

If you decide to travel you should pack a 'pandemic bag' to bring along.

It could include staples like:

  • hand sanitizer
  • face masks
  • disinfecting wipes
  • health insurance cards
  • thermometer
  • latex gloves
  • drinks
  • snacks
