GREEN BAY, Wis — If you think you were hot today, just imagine how the animals covered in fur and feathers at the Bay Beach Wildlife sanctuary felt on Friday afternoon.

Curators at the sanctuary tell NBC26 even though the majority of their animals are from the Midwest they still had to take some precautionary measures for some of their critters because of the scorching heat. Some of the help came in the form of ample water for their animals and water misting operations that became part of their protocol on Friday as the heat picked up.

“We definitely are looking for excessive panting, dehydration and we’re looking for animals that don’t want to eat or aren’t eating, because just like in the winter they need those calories to maintain themselves through these temperatures,“ says Curator of Animals Lori Bankson.

Some exhibits were forced to close because of the heat on Friday including the Fox, Bobcat and Cougar exhibits.
