APPLETON (NBC 26) -- Mayor Jake Woodford will be issuing a proclamation urging people who live in Appleton to wear face coverings in public spaces, the city of Appleton said Tuesday.

"Exceptions to this proclamation may be necessary in certain circumstances for issues of health and safety," the city's news release states.

The city is calling it an "Advisory Proclamation." This comes as other cities, including Green Bay, have issued similar mandates for people to wear face masks.

As of Tuesday, there are 420 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Appleton; 156 of those cases are listed as active and 259 of them are listed as out of isolation. Five people have died in the city due to COVID-19.
