Appleton toddler injured in accidental shooting

APPLETON (NBC 26) -- Appleton Police are investigating an accidental shooting that injured a small child.

On February 17, police said a 3-year-old child had sustained a gunshot wound to their hand. The child was treated at a local hospital and was released. Police said the injury was sustained during an accidental discharge.

Police are not releasing any other details out of sensitivity to the family, but the incident is still being investigated .

The Appleton Police Department is using this incident as an opportunity to discuss proper firearm safety. Failure to secure a firearm allowing a child to have access is a criminal offense. Appleton Police said the department has gun locks available in their lobby free of charge.
