APPLETON, Wis. (NBC 26) -- When the Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down the state's mask mandate, it didn't change the way Monika Austin runs her store.
"Okay, we're a year in, wear a mask," Austin said. "Otherwise it's not going to be over and we're going to be sitting like this for another year and I can't handle that."
Austin owns Beatnik Betty's Resale Butik in Appleton. She'll still require customers to mask in her shop.
"It's definitely an offshoot of me personally, so if that's not cool with you, that's fine," Austin said. "Go somewhere else."
Last summer, Austin says she lost business without large events and wants things to change this year. She also wants shoppers to feel comfortable.
And without heavy foot traffic in the spring, Austin says requiring masks hasn’t hurt sales.
"It's really not sacrificing too much right now," the owner of 10 years said. "And most of my clientele is super cool with it. I rarely get any issues."
At Lillian's in Appleton, you'll find a different policy. Owner Kara Manuel says you don't have to wear a mask when you shop in the store.
"The majority of the people that come in here are wearing masks, but if someone is not wearing a mask, we're not going to tell them that they can't come in" Manuel said.
Manuel says her boutique is large enough for social distancing and employees wear face coverings. But she says she's fighting to meet every customer's needs, mask or no mask.
"I want to be able to respect everyone and I think everyone's on a little bit different page," she said. "We want them to feel comfortable and feel happy."
If a customer is uncomfortable with unmasked shoppers, Manuel says she works to get them to a private area or allows personal browsing after hours. So far, she says her strategy works.
"We would just make sure that that person was comfortable and the other person was comfortable," Manuel said. "And if they didn't, I can't change that."
Right now, the Appleton store owners are in the same community with two different policies.
