APPLETON (NBC 26) — The Appleton Police Department shared a heartwarming story of one of their officers who went above and beyond the badge.

"With so much talk and so many opinions about policing, we think it is important to reaffirm to you that we will respond for any and all calls for help," wrote the Department. "Yes, our officers wear a badge and enforce laws, but more importantly they have hearts."

The Department explained the officer wished to remain anonymous and referred to him as "Sargent Appleton."

According to the Department, on July 3 they received an emergency call from a 90-year-old woman who had simply stated: "Please come help me."

Sgt. Appleton was sent on the welfare check. When he arrived he found the woman had soiled herself, the bathroom had human waste on the floor, and the toilet was clogged.

"The 90-year-old, who also had other medical problems, told him she became ill overnight when the bathroom issues occurred," wrote the Department. "She did not have any family or friends nearby to help her and she called police because she had nowhere else to turn. The woman told Sgt. Appleton she was lonely and often afraid to be alone, and that she struggled to take care of herself."

The officer helped the woman find fresh clothes and engaged with her in conversation to get her to feel better.

Sgt. Appleton said he had located a family member who told him they would check on her. The family member also told Sgt. Appleton she would be moved to an assisted living facility in the near future.

"Sgt. Appleton could have left the residence at that time, but he wasn’t done yet," continued the Department.

The officer fixed the plumbing issue and found a mop in the house to clean the bathroom, bringing it back to a serviceable condition. Additionally, he took the women's soiled clothing and helped wash them for her.

The Department said before he left, Sgt. Appleton made sure she was okay with him leaving and confirmed others would be arriving soon to be with her.

Sgt. Appleton said he also called Human Services to let them know about the incident. This was in case further services were needed or could be provided to her.

"When someone calls asking for help, the Appleton Police Department will respond, today, tomorrow, always," concluded the Department.
