APPLETON (NBC 26) -- Appleton Police stress the importance of talking with your children about internet safety to avoid sharing social media threats and misinformation.

The Appleton Police Department received reports of a Snapchat threat mentioning Appleton schools Wednesday evening.

Officers investigated the claims and determined that Appleton was not initially mentioned, but after several shares on social media someone made a connection to Appleton.

Further investigation into the social media shares lead Appleton Police to determine the Snapchat threats originated in Iowa and was directed to schools there.

The Department said in a Facebook post that incidents like this are a good reminder that if you see something on social media that you believe may be a threat, to contact law enforcement and not continue sharing it.
