APPLETON (NBC 26) — An early morning fire caused thousands of dollars in damage to an Appleton home Wednesday.

Crews found flames coming from the basement of the home on the 300 block of S. Midpark Drive around 1:30 a.m. At first, the Appleton Fire Department said a person was thought to have been trapped inside, but found everyone was out of the house when they got there.

Firefighters estimate about $125,000 worth of damages. They add no working smoke alarms were found in the home.

"With no working smoke alarms, this could have had a tragic outcome. Please check smoke alarms monthly to ensure they work when needed!," the department said on Facebook.

The cause is still under investigation. Another red bulb has now been added to their wreath for the season. The bulb is a part of the department's "Keep the Wreath Green" campaign to promote fire safety and reduce the number of fires during the holiday season.
