APPLETON (NBC 26) — A house fire in Appleton was reported to have been caused by unattended cooking.

The Appleton Fire Department says the fire happened just before noon Saturday in the 600 block of W. Eight St. in the City of Appleton.

According to the home's occupant, she had placed a grease-filled pan on the stove in preparation for cooking. She went into another room and shortly after saw smoke filling the kitchen. She then realized she had turned the burner on and called 911.

Firefighters said there was heavy smoke in the kitchen. They found the grease fire and used a fire extinguisher to knock it down.

A second fire crew say they brought a hoseline to completely extinguish the fire. Crews then used fans to help remove smoke from the home.

According to the report there were no injuries, but two residents have been displaced because of the fire. The home did have working smoke alarms.

The Appleton Fire Department asks you to make sure you are present in the immediate area when cooking to prevent unattended cooking fires. Additionally, smoke alarms should be checked at least monthly.
