APPLETON, Wis. — It's been an emotional week for people in Appleton.

There's shock, sadness, and heartache after the death of driver/engineer Mitch Lundgaard.

“The pain in my heart felt like the day the Twin Towers went down," Deborah Wittwer Maniel said. "It truly did.”

Those emotions came pouring out on Monday. Hundreds of people lined the streets in Appleton to show support for the Appleton Fire Department and the Lundgaard family.

“They do so much for us, and they risk their lives every day," Angela Deeg said. "It’s the least we can do is just come out and pay respects today.”

Through all of the emotions that the community is feeling, there's one that stood above them all as the processional went by.

“I think it just shows the fire department, it will show that family, how much we love them, we respect what they do, and that he deserves the hero send off that he’s going to get today,” Wittwer Maniel said.
