APPLETON, Wis (NBC 26) -- After months of virtual learning, the Appleton Area School District welcomed students back to the classroom today. Tonight, NBC26 shares what the district's superintendent says is on the minds of students and staff.

There are about 16-thousand students in the Appleton Area School District and on Tuesday about 85 percent of them had opted to return to class this week.

"Our staff are just glad to have the students there. We've been preparing for so long and it's just good to get back into the routine even though it looks different," says Judy Basman the district's superintendent.

On Tuesday Baseman checked in on grades K through fourth, the only demographic of students in her district to return to class full time.

"As with any first day of school, there is that excitement but also a little bit of anxiety. Not only for our staff but for our students as well."

For students in fifth through 12th grade, they will be returning to class just two days a week for the time being alternating their schedules to keep attendance at school more limited. District leaders say they will be watching the see which of their new protocols work and which need to be tweaked.

"I would just say at this point we are going to make sure the systems we have in place are working and that we keep the transmission down. When we see successes over time we will definitely get to our goal of having all kids back five days a week full time."
