Milwaukee apartment fire claims 5 lives, victims identified by officials

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Police Department, the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are investigating a fatal fire that occurred on Sunday.

Five people have been confirmed to have died as a result of the fire, according to Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski. The fatalities have been identified as

  • Verna Richard, 62
  • Mark Chaffin, 76
  • Maureen Green, 67
  • Torrell Coleman, 40
  • The fifth victim has not yet been identified.

Crews were called to the apartment near 27th and Highland around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 11, for reports of a fire. When a TMJ4 News crew arrived, they saw many people gathered outside the building, with fire and police squads behind yellow tape.

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, a 76-year-old, a 65-year-old, a 44-year-old, a 32-year-old, two 28-year-olds and a 1-year-old, were injured in the fire, and are being treated at local hospitals.

The American Red Cross reported that nearly 100 people were displaced, and the organization was on scene assisting residents. No firefighters were injured.
