OSHKOSH — The government is hiring for the 2020 census and right now there are nearly 10-thousand jobs available here in Wisconsin. For those able to apply quickly for the job openings there could be an opportunity to secure a part-time or full-time job, for nearly five months.
Every ten years the federal government seeks out nearly half of million job seekers, to collect crucial information about our neighbors. On Thursday the job hunt began for qualified applicants in Oshkosh.
"They will be going door to door and knocking on doors talking to people and getting them to answer the census," says Karen Davis who works as a media specialist for the US Census Bureau.
Census takers will be responsible for asking whole neighborhoods questions like what's your name, sex, age, and race. The questions will be asked in an attempt to find out the demographics of our state.
"So many things are impacted by those numbers. Congressional seats, funding that is at the state level and down to the local communities. All of that is impacted by those numbers," adds Davis.
The part time or full time gig will only last from about March through July, but Davis says it’s a great opportunity for job seekers. The job pays anywhere from 17 to 24 dollars a dollar and paychecks are issued every week.
The application process only takes about 15 minutes and you can do it online but the wait to find out if you landed the job, well that could take about a month. And those in the know say it's a great opportunity for students, retirees and anyone looking for schedule that can be tweaked from time to time.
"There is a lot of flexibility for people who are in between jobs or anybody looking to make additional income," add Davis.
Outagamie, Brown and Winnebago counties are each hiring about 1-thousand people for the job, but there are openings across every county in our region. Requirements include having a car in most cases and access to the internet.
