Larry Nassar's sentencing has sparked reaction from the Green Bay gymnastics community.
NBC26 spoke with Chandra Reivitis, the owner of Tri-County Gymnastics in Ashwaubenon, who said the case has been tough to hear, but has started a good conversation.
Reivitis is a former gymnast and competitive cheerleader. She explained she was surprised that all of these young women were abused by Nassar.
She wants more standards put in place at a national level and to rebuild the program from the ground up.
“It's super important as gym owners that we protect all of our athletes, It's really unfortunate that that happened at such a national level,” said Reivitis.
She wants her athletes to know they will always have her support.
“I think it's important for everybody's voices to be heard and to let kids know that if anything happens to them, they have somebody that they're comfortable to talk to,” she said. “And that's what we try to facilitate here, that we are always here for our kids, through anything.”
Reivitis said she has always done background checks on employees at her gym, coaches are not alone with children and there are security cameras throughout the gym.
She added all of the women who spoke at the sentencing, sharing their stories of abuse by Nassar, are role models and heroes for her athletes to look up to.
