The Appleton Police Department has taken several people into custody for attempting to extort a large amount of money from a local businessman.
Police say on December 9 at about 1 a.m. someone left a note on the door of a residence in the 3600 block of N. Racine Street.
The note instructed the homeowner collect $7,000 to pay for an alleged wrong doing connected to a business he operates.
The note went on to direct the homeowner to place the money behind a building on W. Whitter Drive.
Authorities say the homeowner immediately contacted the Appleton Police Department.
Officers from the Appleton Police Department monitored the drop location, where a bag had been placed.
When several individuals picked up the bag, they were taken into custody.
The individuals were then questioned by the Appleton Police Department.
Two individuals from Menasha, Amanda Lehman and Kishera Grover, have been charged with Threats to Injure by the Outagamie County District Attorney's Office.
Police say a third party believed to have been involved in the planning and execution of the extortion is still being searched for by officers.
No one was hurt as a result of the incident.
